![]() ![]() Unfortunately, the lack of AI bots tends to hamper the appeal of the skirmish mode somewhat. Outside of the main campaigns, the game offers loads of multiplayer options and, since the game has been out for a few months outside of the US, you can definitely find opponents online. The sudden appearance of an awkwardly voiced cutscene is really your only clue that things are moving along. The lack of clear objectives and reliable triggers makes it difficult to tell if you're experiencing a lull in the action, or if you're just missing what you need to move the encounter along. Whether you're trying to hold back an Allied advance in a narrow desert pass or sneaking into an enemy installation, you'll always find yourself outclassed and outgunned by the enemy. Part of it is that the game always places the player on the weaker side of a fight. I'm confident enough in my RTS bona fides that I don't have any shame in saying that. It's rare that this happens, but I had to play through this game on Easy because the Medium setting was simply too brutal. As fun as the missions are, most gamers are simply going to find them too difficult. The level of destruction here is just awesome. This kind of progression helps to divide the larger missions into digestible chunks. You may find yourself playing simply to establish a beachhead and then open up new bits of the map to stop an enemy convoy or assault an airfield. In some cases, the maps even expand during the course of play as you reach each new objective. The settings are pleasantly varied and each map is large enough for real tactical maneuvering. These range from massive "hold the line" missions where you fight back wave after wave of advancing enemies to more cautious Commandos-style infiltration missions.
